The Wolcott Mill Trail
Association is a nonprofit corporation formed by a few devoted horsemen
and women in the northern Macomb County area. The sole purpose of the
Association is to establish, develop, maintain and enhance equestrian
trails and facilities at the Wolcott Mill Metropark in Ray, Michigan.
Wolcott
Mill Metropark is operated by the Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority
and is located in Ray Township, Michigan. Access to the main trail
is located at the Camp Rotary entrance at 20505 29 Mile Road, between
Romeo Plank and North Ave. The park owns approximately 2700 acres,
consisting of a historic grist mill, a farm learning center, a group
camp and Northbrook Golf Course. Much of the acreage is currently
being leased for crop farming.
A small
but devoted group of horse people have been working on weekends, marking
and cutting trails through the woods and fields. On May 27th, 2000
the first five miles of the Wolcott Mill Equestrian Trail opened.
Use of these trails requires a Metropark Vehicle entrance pass or a day
pass, execution of a liability waver and a bridle tag from Stony
Creek Metropark park's office (the Bridle tag is free and is good at
other Metroparks with bridle paths). This bridle tag must be worn when
using the trails.
Join the
Association and become active in establishing horse trails in our local
area.
The
Association has both short and long term goals which include but are not
limited to:
-
Establishing miles of
bridle and carriage paths along open edges of farm fields and through
wooded areas following the north branch of the Clinton River.
-
Increasing length of
trails each year by having scheduled work bees.
-
Developing "rest" areas
for both horse and rider.
-
Establishing a quarterly
newsletter.
-
Involving local 4-H and
community service groups to assist in the project.
-
Scheduling fund raising
rides and other events at the park.
-
Quarterly club meetings.
